Welcome to our new blog that will follow developments at the intersection of human rights, natural resources, and the global economy – and will hopefully, over time, become a useful resource for sharing information on these issues.
The first article we’re posting marks the one year anniversary of the U.N.’s declaration of the human right to water and sanitation, including statements by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The piece also highlights a new report by Food and Water Watch, which illustrates the barriers that water privatization schemes continue to pose to people’s access to water, in particular for impoverished people living in under-developed countries.
In keeping with the water theme, Manuela Picq reports on the use of old anti-terror laws against environmental activists protesting the privatization of water in Latin America. One year after the U.N. declaration on the human right to water and sanitation, it is clear that implementation of those rights will require a significant struggle.
